Misión Kateri has published "The Book of Tuguri," a document that reveals the marvelous world of the Makurawe people, sharing their stories, memories, and rituals through the testimonies of members from this indigenous group in Sonora.
The Makurawe, commonly known as Guarijíos, are one of the lesser-known tribes in Mexico. For centuries, they have primarily relied on agriculture, cultivating corn and beans along the banks of the Río Mayo in small farming areas known as "magüechics."
This book is the latest publication from Misión Kateri and highlights one of the most important ceremonies of the Makurawe: the tuguri, a ritual of gratitude connected to the origin of the world and the task of empowering the earth.
The first edition of "The Book of Tuguri" is authored by anthropologists Alejandro Aguilar Zeleny and Roberto Ramírez Méndez, along with Father David Beaumont OFM Cap. It serves as a tribute to past generations and an invitation for people today and in the future to keep these beautiful traditions alive; it is a journey through the thoughts of this great indigenous people of Sonora.
